Many IT and security professionals argue that the only way to secure data is to physically shred data-bearing components. This position is based on a completely reasonable concern for asset security, but unfortunately overlooks significant drawbacks to shredding as a data destruction method. 


The reality is that shredding is neither more secure, nor more cost-effective, than erasure.
